We’re a small batch bakery in Shieldfield, specialising in slow ferment, handmade breads, made with all organic flours and real fresh ingredients. We’re also a social enterprise, aiming to embed in the fabric of our area and contribute to the wellbeing of our community in all its facets.

Big River is a social enterprise bakery with a big mission but tiny ovens. Over the next two years we’re rolling out a programme of accredited training opportunities for people facing complex barriers to achieving employment in our region. We’re thrilled that our programme is being funded by the European Social Fund, and have worked hard to bring most of the pieces together to make this opportunity a reality, but in order to reach our full training potential we desperately need to install a commercial deck oven asap!

Our tiny oven situation also impacts on our bakers who bake with ingenuity and tenacity, pushing the envelope on what can be produced out of our two convection ovens! They work double time to get our bread made, and the quality, taste and consistency of what they bake is nothing short of miraculous given current oven capacity. We have some funds in place but need to top them up to get where we need to be, so we’re reaching out for help to buy our new deck oven.
